July 21, Sat {A} Annual Sommerfest Outing and Party on the Plaza. Once again North Stars will gather at Orchestra Hall during Sommerfest for music and socializing on Saturday evening, July 21st. This year’s Sommerfest theme is “Music for Mandela,” celebrating Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday and the MN Orchestra’s upcoming South Africa tour in August. This very special concert features Osmo Vänskä conducting the MN Orchestra in a world premiere by a South African composer AND Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, with its magnificent “Ode to Joy” finale (couldn’t we all use a little joy?). Saturday the 21st is also the Sommerfest “International Day of Music,” featuring 12 FREE hours of music and dance on four stages in and around Orchestra Hall. Group tickets for the concert are only $25 this year. But you don’t need a concert ticket to join old and new North Star friends for the free music, fun, drinks, and food from Sommerfest vendors. (The Orchestra is also collecting “Books for Africa,” with a goal of sending 22,000 new or gently used books for children and adults. Please consider bringing along book donations for this internationally acclaimed project begun here in the Twin Cities. Read more about it at www.booksforafrica.org.)
